LNGDefects in the storage tank insulation layer

LNG storage tanks are typical cryogenic pressure vessels with a vacuum powder insulation type. They have a double - cylinder structure. The inner and outer cylinders are fixed by tension slings. The middle interlayer is filled with perlite, and a molecular sieve adsorber is set. There are vaporizers and cryogenic liquid pumps outside the storage tank, through which high - pressure gas can be directly sent out by the vaporizer. The material of the inner cylinder is austenitic stainless steel, such as 0Cr18Ni9 and SUS304. The outer cylinder is made of steel for general pressure vessels, such as 16MnR, 20g, and Q235r.

Project Application

Vacuum powder insulation involves evacuating the space filled with powder. Low - thermal - conductivity powders, fibers, or foam materials are used to reduce the heat transfer into the space, thereby reducing gas - based heat transfer. Meanwhile, the powder particles also weaken radiative heat transfer. Once the degree of vacuum in the interlayer meets certain requirements, heat transfer can be significantly reduced, enabling the insulation effect of the storage tank to meet the operational requirements.

During the operation of an LNG storage tank, factors such as thermal expansion and contraction and construction quality can cause the perlite filled in the LNG storage tank to settle and the vacuum to leak, resulting in defects and malfunctions in the insulation layer. The more severe the settlement of the perlite, the more significant the cold transfer, and the lower the temperatures of the inner wall steel plate and the outer wall of the LNG storage tank.

Application effect

At the corresponding positions where there are defects in the insulation layer of the LNG storage tank, frosting, condensation, or even icing may occur. Long - term low - temperature leakage not only reduces energy efficiency but also affects the safe operation of the LNG storage tank. It is recommended to regularly conduct predictive inspection and maintenance of the LNG storage tank using Fotric's handheld explosion - proof thermal imager to ensure the long - term operation of the LNG storage tank.
